Currently, about 92% of all searches done on the internet are done using the Google search engine. This translates to the fact that about 3.5 billion searches are done on Google daily. There are currently tons of search engine available on the internet, yet Google is more highly used that they all combined. Other search engines include, Bing, yahoo, yandex, YouTube, etc. All these other search engines joined together accounts for just 27% of all searches while Google takes the remaining.

This is the major reason why every blog and website owner pays keen attention to ranking on Google. The truth is that if you successfully rank on Google, you are made. This is why if you do a serious and in-depth study on how to rank a post or video on search engines or YouTube, you will find out that majority of the results pay more attention to Google than other search engines.

With this fact, we then want to know how to do keyword research on Google. There are tons of keyword research tools out there like, SEMrush, Ahref, Moz, Ubersuggest, Kwfinder, and many more. Some of them have their free versions and premium version but then, Google keyword planner is totally free for all users.

Particularly, why I choose Google entirely above every other keyword research tool is simple. If a man has a house, he is in the best position to give you the direction of how to locate the house from where you are. Other people may give you the correct address, but the owner’s address will be more trusted and reliable. My point is this, most of the searches are done on Google. Therefore, Google is in the best position to tell us the keyword people search for more.

Other keyword tools have their awesome and matchless features which could also put you on top of your competitors, yet, Google remains the boss.

This article is not just about Google keyword planner. It is about Google in its entirety and how you can leverage on it for your keyword research. Let me show you how to do keyword research with Google, using some of their tools.

Before we delve into the issues, let me tell you why you should use Google, most especially as a small business owner.

- Google is free: Google services for keyword research are entirely free of charge as no fee is been requested. This is a big advantage for small business owner who may not afford much budget for their keyword research exercise.
- Google is more professional: Building the world largest search engine is no child’s play. It means that the technologies of Google as a company are second to none. Since more of the organic searches and traffics come from Google, then Google should be in a better position to tell us how to get those traffics.

- Discover new keywords: Get suggestions for keywords related to your products, services, or website. Google will help you with other keyword ideas you can rank for. For example, if you search for a keyword like, best restaurants in California, Google will bring other suggestions like Best restaurants in America, best restaurant in Chicago. Such that if you cannot build a content on the best restaurants in California, you could choose other related and alternative keywords and develop contents on them.
- See monthly searches: See estimates on the number of searches a keyword gets each month. No keyword research tool may be able to give you the exact monthly searches for a particular keyword because the search volume varies. For example, people looking for information on the Nigerian election now would have drastically reduced compared to the election period. As such, Google is able to track the range for every keyword. The ranges appear as 10-100, 100-1k, 1k-10k, 10k-100k etc. This will give you an insight on what to expect from a certain keyword if your content successfully ranks.

How to do keyword research with Google Keyword Planner

Although, SEO experts prefer other paid tools to Google keyword planner, yet this tool is an awesome tool to use. Most especially, if you are a small business owner and do not have enough funds to spend on advertisement, using this tool will build you up, little by little.

The major reason why experts prefer other SEO tools to Google keyword planner is because other tools gives a guessed yet near accurate search volume for a particular keyword while Google keyword planner gives the range of the search volume.

This is what I mean. If you search for a particular keyword, some tools will tell you the exact number of search volumes per month. But what Google keyword does is that it gives you a range like 10-100, 100-1000, 1k-10k, 10k-100k, etc. the reason for this is that, there is a constant change in the volume of searches for a keyword over time.

For example, during and shortly after the United State elections, you will discover that keywords that had to do with the election were in high demand. Keywords like, “who is Joe Biden”, “US election result”, “who is the winner of US election”, “US election result by state”, etc. These and many more similar keywords were in high demand then. But now, nobody cares about those keywords.

Seeing that there is a constant change in the search volume of a particular keyword, this tool was then programmed to provide search results in range in order to accommodate any change in the search volume.

To use this tool, you do not need to create a dedicated account with the tool. Once you have a Google account, you can access every Google service such that you do not need to create new accounts for every of Google services.

To use Google keyword planner, follow the steps below

- Go to ads.google.com or google.com and search for google keyword planner

- Click on Go to keyword planner
- On the next page, click on “Proceed Anyway”
- Click on the tools icon in the next page. See image below

- In the next page, there are two basic options and I will show you how to use the both of them.

The first option is, “Discover new keywords” and the second is “Get search volume and forecast”.

Let’s use the “Discover new keywords” option.

When you click on discover new keywords, you have two options to choose from.

The first question is this, how do you want to do the keyword research? You could choose to start with keywords or with website.

In the screenshot below, I chose start with keywords using the keyword, “hotels in California”. Other related keywords were suggested like, resorts, motels, apartments in California, house in California, flights to California and California hotels.

These are related keyword ideas to the exact keyword we searched for. You can go ahead and try it with other keyword ideas and enjoy the experience. 

How to do keyword research with Google search

Let’s move over to How to do keyword research with Google search and know how we can do keyword research on it. With Google search, we can get several keyword ideas that can help our experience. Remember that using the premium version of yoast seo plugin on your wordpress site, you can target several keywords with just one blog post and get the organic traffic massively coming from Google.

 For example, you see a website that ranks for more than one hundred thousand keywords and you think they have more than one hundred thousand contents on the site. No! they may not even have upto a thousand contents on that website. The gig there is that the few contents they have there are high quality contents which ranks for several keywords. The secret on how to achieve that great fit is what I want to share with you in this section.

For you to target more than one keyword in one content, ensure they are closely related keywords. For example, if I want to write a content about UEFA Champions league 2022, I can also target the following keywords on the same content; premier league clubs in UEFA champions league 2022, winner of UEFA champions league 2022, best player in UEFA champions league 2022, highest goal scorer in UEFA champions league 2022, best goal keeper in UEFA champions league 2022, best team in UEFA champions league 2022, best coach in UEFA champions league 2022, club with the most red cards in UEFA champions league 2022 and more keywords. I guess you understand the point here.

Although you could decide to create several contents to rank for each of these keywords, but then if you create a quality content, you can use it to target all the above keywords just in one content.   

So back to how to do keyword research with Google. With this, you will find out how you can get keyword ideas on Google search. Let’s do the practical with the phrase “Keyword research”. 

First tip

Go to google.com and type in the keyword phrase “keyword research”, once you do it, do not click the enter button, give few seconds. A drop down list containing 10 related keyword ideas appear as in the image above. Unless Google update their algorithm, for now the keyword ideas are always 10. Remember that we want to get keyword ideas for the phrase “keyword research”.

Google went ahead to show us other related keyword we can also target. Here you see “keyword research tool”, “keyword research tool free”, “keyword research Google”, “keyword research for YouTube”, “keyword research pro”, “keyword research meaning”, “keyword research for SEO”, “keyword research software” and “keyword research template”. You will see that the 10 keyword ideas above are very much related. As such, you can choose to rank for any of them. If you are a newbie, ranking for a keyword like “keyword research” is totally out of it because the big guys have dominated the keyword. Its good you look out for a long tail keyword.

So going by the keyword ideas, you will see the similarities in these keywords. Hence, it is possible to target all of them with one content.

Second tip

Still on goggle.com, before you type in the keyword phrase “keyword research”, tap the space bar once.

You will see more keyword suggestions added as prefix to the keyword phrase you typed into the search button. You will see some prefix added to the keyword phrase like, free, best, seo, Google, how to do, best free and semrush. Do not take these suggestions as Google trying to guess or predict. These are actually what people are searching for such that if you can develop quality content around any of these keyword ideas, with time, it will surely rank.

With this, you could do a combination of keyword ideas in the first and second tip to get a long tail keyword and then develop contents around it.

NOTE: Very importantly, if you have a very strong internet connection and you are typing in the keyword phrase into the search button, you will observe that for every letter you type, suggestions will be made. Then the more you continue typing, the more the suggestions are been narrowed to what you want.

Third Tip

If you have searched for a keyword already and you are already on the Google environment, delete the keyword phrase you typed and type “_keyword research”. Remember to put the underscore (_) before you write the keyword phrase. You will also see some prefix added to the keyword phrase you typed.

Compare the second and third tips, you will find out that the keyword ideas are almost the same. In some cases they may not be the same.

Fourth tip

Let me show you this fourth tip with another keyword phrase. Let’s use “FIFA world cup” keyword phrase in this example.

If you insert the target keyword “FIFA world cup” into the search button, in between the FIFA and world, tap the space bar twice, you will see that some words were added to the keyword.

Do the same thing in between world and cup and see the suggestions you will get. You may not necessarily need to give a double space bar in between the two words. Just make sure that your pointer is in between the two words in question.

How to do keyword research with Google suggest

The Google suggest feature is another strong keyword research tool. This is seen for every keyword you type into the search box. The Google suggest is divided into two categories. the first category most times is tagged people also ask. It appears at the middle of the page.  How this works is that when you search for a given keyword, it tells you what other people are asking for on Google that are related to your search phrase.

Let us see an example with the keyword how to get a good domain name. See the result in the screenshot below

You will find out that what people also ask are very much related to what you searched for. With this, any of these topics could become a keyword to target.

The second is tagged Related searches and it always appears at the bottom of the page on Google. With this tool, Google provides related searches of what other people are searching for. Looking at the keyword suggestions, it appears clearly that people are also searching for those topics. Let us also see an example with the keyword profitable blogging niches in the screenshot below

Most times, when you search for a given keyword, you may not find a content that exactly matches your intention. The alternative is to click on one of the suggestions presented by Google. Perhaps you may find a content that suit you through this way. When you take note of all the suggestions which people also search for, you can make out time to build quality contents around those keywords. Google help by simplifying keyword research such that, the newbies in keyword research could be carried along as well.
